A pageant to recall
Dover had never seen such a spectacle.
On Monday, July 27, 1908, Dovorians witnessed
a stirring and splendid spectacle when
the first great pageant hit Dover.
Mrs Vera Knott, 1ff Longfield Road, Dover, can't exactly remember the event -she wasn't born until four months later - but she cherishes a copy of the special pageant edit ion brought out by the Dover Times. .
She discovered the special newspaper when she was searching through some drawers in her Dover home.
Her father, William Holbrook, a decorator and signwriter, had given it to her.
"He was a hoarder and so am I. But I'm glad I kept the paper. It's interesting to read," said Vera.
The pageant all those years ago was a history of Dover re-enacted by local townspeople in verse and prose.
The Dover Times reported:
"The whole pageant from whatever side you look at it, is a revelation of what well laid schemes, hard work and enthusiasm will accomplish."
